He spent most of his active business life in Detroit where he worked both for the Ford Motor Company and General Motors. He formed his own airplane parts compnay and operated his own wholesale grocery company until he retired in 1946, when he and his second wife, Marjorie, moved to Florida where he was a philanthropist, art collector and patron of the Arts. He was a life member, founding member and Honorary trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, FL; a co-founder and honorary director of the Bath Club in Reddington Beach; a founding member of the International Society for the General Semantics in Chicago, Illinois; a co-founder and honorary director of the Clearwater Art Seminar; and an honorary life member of the NAACP. Calvin recounted the follwing amusing incident ... During my freshman year (1909) at Williams, I hired a horse and buggy and drove over Berlin Mountain and inquired in Berlin the whereabouts of the Hull homestead. The store keeper whom I asked said, "About all the houses you see around here are Hull homesteads." I finally found the right one, with the proper burying ground beside it, knocked at the side door, and said to the old man who answered my knocks, "I am Calvin Vary." He stared at me, then turned and called, "Gene, come here! Here's Calvin Vary, and he hasn't changed a hair in forty years!" |
