LOWVILLE, N.Y. — Maurice R. Vary, Sr., 70, of State Route 12, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Lewis County General Hospital where he had been a patient since Tuesday evening. Born Nov. 2, 1938, in Lowville, a son of the late Harold A. and Dorothea Mae Bellinger Vary, he graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School in 1956. He worked with his parents on the family farm on Route 12 in the town of Harrisburg for a few years, then went to work for Nortz Distributing for 32 years, retiring in 1988. He married Margaret R. “Maggie” Waugh on Aug. 29, 1959, in Copenhagen at the Congregational Church with Rev. John C. Wetzel, pastor officiating. The couple lived most of their married life on the family homestead. In January 1989, Maurice and Maggie bought “Hillbilly Heaven”. They owned and operated the bar and grill until 2003, when they sold the business. Maurice also drove bus part-time for the Copenhagen Central School. Maurice was a member of the United Church of Copenhagen and was a past member of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce. He was a well-known musician in the area playing in local bands as early as 1955. His first band was the “The Rhythm Rangers”, the bands name changed to “Black River Ramblers”. The band played together for about 9 years. After a couple of years off Maurice then joined the “Sodbusters” and they played together about 10 years. He then played in “Maplesugar”. Maurice left that band and joined the “KKK Band” “Kizzers Kountry Krew Band” and they played at Hillbilly Heaven for 5 years. The band name was changed to “Country Crew”, and he retired in November of 2006. The band continues to play today. He made and sold leather crafts, enjoyed watching the birds, softball games, dirt track racing and especially loved “old country music”. In addition to his wife, Maggie, of Lowville, he is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law: Maurice R. “Raymond” Vary, Jr. and his wife, Lorie, Valley, Ala. and Donald G. and his companion, Karen Rudd, Hannibal, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca M. “Becky” Vary, Carthage; two daughters and a son-in-law: Holly J. and Barry “Joe” Lyndaker, Lowville, and Dawn M. Priest and her companion, Eben Shettleton, Watertown; seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and aunts, uncles and cousins. His son, Bryan C. Vary, and grandson, Tyrell Vary, died before him. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Sundquist Funeral Home, 7676 N. State St., Lowville, with Rev. Donald Briant, pastor of the Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating. A spring burial will be in the West Lowville Cemetery. Family and friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 9, at Sundquist Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in Mr. Vary’s name to: Friends of Lewis County Hospice, Inc., P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367 or to Lewis County Search and Rescue, Lowville, NY or to the Copenhagen Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary, Copenhagen, NY.
