ohn H. "Jack" Scholl Jr., 86, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Fort Monroe, Va., and moved to Queens Village, New York City, as a child. A resident of Haverhill, Mass., for eight years, he moved to Atkinson in 1960.

He was a graduate of Jamaica High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of Word War II, serving as a corporal in Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. Among his many awards and medals, he received three bronze service stars.

Mr. Scholl retired from The Haverhill Paperboard Co. as the personnel manager, completing 35 years of service when the company was also known as Continental Can Co. and Robert H. Gare Co.

He was a member of Holy Angels Parish, Plaistow, and was a longtime member and past Worshipful Master of Saggahew Lodge A.F. & A.M.; a member of the Scottish Rite, Princes of Jerusalem, Valley of Haverhill; a past president of the Haverhill Industrial Management Club; and was active with the Atkinson Little League and the Boy Scouts of America.

An avid baseball, football and hockey fan, he was a former member of the Haverhill YMCA, Cedardale Health and Athletic Club, and the Newburyport Raquet Club. He enjoyed tennis, downhill and cross country skiing, softball, traveling and spending time with his family on Swans Island, Maine.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wanda A. (Schuvart) Scholl; one daughter Barbara A. Boucher and her husband, Richard, of Trophy Club, Texas; one son Russell J. Scholl and his wife, Marilyn, of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Robert H. Scholl of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Warren W. Scholl.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday, May 28, in Holy Angels Church, Plaistow. A private family burial service will be in the State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
