Shared note | Mr. Vary was a charter member of the Harrisburg Grange and he was a carpenter of much ability. He built many barns and was Master Carpenter on the "Big Barn" on the Lyon Estate at Lyons Falls. He enlisted in 1862 in the Civil War and was honorably discharged in 1864. After his first wife died, John married his brother Willett's widow, Maria Ann Wilson Vary, and raised his young niece and nephew - Jennie Ceola and Willett Adoniram - as his own. They lived in the Vary Homestead on NY Route 12 in Harrisburg. He was the revered patriarch of the Vary family until his death. |
