Her parents were pioneer settlers in Harrisburg NY. She was born in a log house, built by her father on the farm he cleared. The house was located in a meadow north of what is called the Rook Hill. The home burned circa 1912.
According to her father's Last Will & Testament (certified on 1 Jul 1850), he referred to her as Anna Maria, rather than Maria Ann as we have always known her. (Comment by 3rd great-granddaughter, Joanne Vary Schwandes on 5/10/2012.)
3rd great-granddaughter Charlotte Ann Jardine Streifer has in her possession a painting done by Maria while attending Seminary, in which she and her husband, Willett Vary, Jr are depicted on shore, waving farewell to the Baptist missionary Adoniram Judson as he and his wife depart for Burma. 4th great-grandson Hasan W. Schwandes has in his possession 2 other painting done by Maria. [jvs, 1/6/2015]
Note that her name was pronounced by family members as Mar-EYE-ah.
