Note

My dear children Elbert, and John. Your father makes this record so that when you become able to read manuscript you may here learn that yours was a most dear and a most excellent mother. Your dear mother was a finest christian, affectionate, kind, and cheerful, and always made your father's house a pleasant, happy home. And both of you she loved with a mother's fondest best love. It was her constant prayer and hearts desire that you should grow up in uprightness and goodness and she was forced in another pathway. Heavens door deprived you of her tender and affectionate watchcare, but may her prayers for your welfare be ardently rewarded. Written about Amarintha Brooks Vary by her anguished husband John F. Vary, in his own hand, undated, but probably after her death in 1856 at the age of 44. Elbert was 4 at the time, and baby John was only 4 months old.
