Shared note | Orley M. Wood, only son of Jerome Wood, of Lowville, met with a horrible death at Carthage, Saturday evening. Mr. Wood was night brakeman on a shifting engine in charge of Engineer James Walsh and Conductor Parker. At the time of the accident Saturday evening the engine and crews were shifting cars about 800 feet below the Carthage freight depot. Mr. Wood was on top of a string of cars which were standing on the main track awaiting the passing of several cars which were being picked in on No. 4 track, the next parallel track to the main track. Mr. Wood attempted to jump to the moving cars, but slipped and plunged headlong between the tracks. His neck was broken and death was instantaneous. Dr. O.F. Adams, the railroad physician, was summoned. Coroner Ryan, of Philadelphia, was notified and he designated Dr. Adams as coroner's physician. An inquest was unnecessary, and the remains were brought to Lowville on the evening train. The deceased was born in Martinsburg 28 years ago. In the spring of 1902 he entered the employ of the railroad company at Lowville station as an assistant. He went to Carthage about eight months ago, where he has since been employed as brakeman. Saturday morning Mr. Wood purchased a new pair of heavy shoes and it is believed that the new shoes caused him to slip, as he attempted to jump from one car to another. He was a member of the Order of Railway Brakemen, in which he was insured for $1,400. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. (Death notice as printed in the Lowville Journal & Republican, Thursday, 8 Oct 1903) |
