Shared note

Mr. Vary was a charter member of the Harrisburg Grange and he was a carpenter of much ability. He built many barns and was Master Carpenter on the "Big Barn" on the Lyon Estate at Lyons Falls. He enlisted in 1862 in the Civil War and was honorably discharged in 1864. After his first wife died, John married his brother Willett's widow, Maria Ann Wilson Vary, and raised his young niece and nephew - Jennie Ceola and Willett Adoniram - as his own. They lived in the Vary Homestead on NY Route 12 in Harrisburg. He was the revered patriarch of the Vary family until his death.

Note

Death Date Discrepancy

In one of the albums put together by Historian Marguerite Hess Parrish, a newspaper clipping dated 22 May 1924 states that John B. died at the home of his daughter in Nahant, Mass., "last night". That would have been Wednesday, May 21st. The source paper is unknown, but is assumed from the Boston Standard, since we could read the word "Standard" in the partially cut off margin. (this should be researched further to verify the article)

Later in the article it says "The body will arrive Friday morning at 11:05 o'clock and the funeral will be held at the old homestead in Harrisburg, NY Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock with burial at Greenwood cemetery." Friday would have been the 23rd of May, making burial Saturday, May 24th. Greenwood cemetery is now called Fairview cemetery.

John B Vary's VA pension document was also located reflecting the 21 MAY 1924 death date.

The obituary in the Lowville Journal Republican dated 29 May 1924, listed dates reflecting the following week. His death on the 28th, with funeral on the the following Saturday (31st).

However, a snippet from the Jefferson County Journal on Wednesday May 28, page three shows that Mr. and Mrs. JJ Allen attended the funeral of John B. Vary at Lowville. This is assumed to be John B's cousin and his wife - Polly Allen's brother's son, John Jay Jr. (his existence should be researched as well to verify)

There is also an obituary in the 22 MAY 1924 Watertown daily times for John B Vary with the same dates (21st and 24th).

It seems the Lowville Journal paper was printed in error, and the dates in our records have been changed to reflect this assumption.
