Shared note | He was a fighter plane pilot in WWII and Korea. Lt. Col. (ret.) USMC E. Duncan Cameron, 92, passed away at Catawba Regional Hospice House. He was raised in Inlet, NY in the Adirondack Mountains. He graduated from Johnstown High School in Johnstown, NY in June, 1940. He attended Syracuse University in 1940-1941 and on December 8, 1941 he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet and in 1942 graduated from Corpus Christi, Texas as a Marine Aviator. Duncan flew 75 combat missions in the F4U Corsair fighter planes from the USS Bunker Hill as a member of the VMF221, the Flying Falcons and was in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He also flew another 75 combat missions as a member of the VMF312, during the Korean Conflict, June 25, 1950 through July 27, 1953. In 1952, he became a helicopter pilot and served as engineering and operations officer for Marine Helicopter Squadron HMR216 at the Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune, NC. During his military career he earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses, seven Air Medals, three Presidential Unit Citations and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Duncan retired from the Marine Corps in 1963 after serving as Air Officer with the 12th Staff Group in Los Angeles, CA for eight years. Duncan received several service awards while in the Marine Corps League Detachment 1163, where he was also 2014 Marine of the Year. He was employed as a salesman for his entire working career, and was a man who had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life. He was married to Virginia Pannell in 1945 and they had two children, Judith Ann and Laurie Lynn. He married Darla Heitzman Dickey in 1980 and they divorced in 1985. They adopted a daughter, Julianna. He married Leslie Ann Hepworth Dzimitrowicz and they raised her two children, Heather and Jeffrey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Malcolm Cameron. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 27 years, Leslie Hepworth-Cameron; daughters, Laurie Garrison and husband, Buster of California, Judith Cameron Brown and husband, Joel of California, Julianna Haro of Arizona; grandchildren, Christopher, Madison, Paul John III, Sara and Megan. He will also be missed by his Marine Corps family. A service of remembrance will be held at the Cameron residence at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, January 3, 2016. Rev Homer Greene will officiate and his military service will be honored. Memorials may be made to the Marine Corps League Detachment 1163, PO Box 9484, Hickory, NC 28603. |
