She attended Syracuse University and graduated from Marycrest College in 1975. She was a Business Office Supervisor for the New York Telephone Company in Watertown, New York, before her marriage to the Rev. Thomas N. Kalshoven in 1955. After graduating from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, she was a teacher in the Davenport Schools for fifteen years, thirteen of them as a reading teacher in the Title I program at Jefferson School. Mary Kalshoven was a member and ordained elder of First Presbyterian Church in Davenport and served in the Stephen Ministry. After retirement Mary tutored adults in reading. She helped one young adult learn to read so she could become the first member in her family to vote in a national election. During Mary’s residence in Ridgecrest Village she served as the chair of the Resident Advocate Committee for the state of Iowa at Crest Health Center for 3 years. She later served in the Volunteer Service League, the Resident Council, and the recycling program.
