Grant was educated at Middleport Public Schools. He graduated from Lockport High School and also graduated from Rider Business College in New Jersey. He served his country for three years in WWII in FRUPAC (Fleet Radio Unit of the Pacific). He served as a Communications Cryptanalyst, participating in the breaking and reading of Japanese Naval Codes and he was a recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation. Grant retired from Harrison Radiator (General Motors) in 1991. He was a member of the American Legion in Gasport, Gasport Lodge Number 787, F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge and was a member of Covenant United Church of Christ in Gasport. Beloved husband of the late Mary Helen (Hosfeld) Vary; dearest father of Susan Vary of Florida, Carol Torriere of Medina, and Barbara Whitmore of Arizona; grandfather of Renee (Jeremy) Wilson of Florida and Shane Torriere of Middleport; great-grandfather of Conner Torriere and Hayden Wilson; son of the late Grant T. and Ada M. (Hudson) Vary; brother of Grace (Clyde) Flint of North Carolina and the late Florence Reese, Dorothy Scarborough and Mable Ressiguie; also survived by his very dear and loving friend, Lucille Crafts, and her close knit family. No prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Covenant United Church of Christ, 4449 Main St., Gasport, NY on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 1 PM.
