Shared note

William brought his family with him. The town was named after him. He built the first saw mill and grist mill in Varysburg. He and his sons were also natural mechanics and worked mostly in wood and iron.

William served as a Lt. Col and a Commander of the Genesee Militia in the Continental Army from 1813 to Sep 1814. His oldest son, William T. Jr, when a lad of 15, carried dispatches for his father on horseback between Batavia and Black Rock to our forces while the Village of Buffalo was on fire, an act of the British.

William and family later moved to Sparta, Ontario, Canada. The William Vary home, just north of Sparta's main intersection, is one that the historical society has researched and marked with a plaque. It, the village's oldest, was built in the 1830s.
